Across our region, climate change is an existential threat to nations and communities. Globally, water and food crises exacerbated by climate change are resulting in escalating cycles of civil unrest and conflict. Inevitably, vulnerable people migrate from affected areas in increasing numbers. There are increasing burdens on military forces, whether in providing disaster relief and humanitarian assistance, or due to intervention in the conflicts.
This briefing document for 2022 Federal Election candidates covers several main areas: the nexus between climate change and security; climate security for Australia; regional hotspots; and comparable climate security actions by our allies. ASLCG also propose a set of initial actions in a climate and security plan, starting with an urgent Climate and Security Risk Assessment.
